Freelancers Union

A US-based advocacy organization and mutual benefit organization for independent workers, founded by Sara Horowitz. One of the largest membership organizations for freelancers in the United States, providing health insurance, retirement accounts, and community resources. A foundational case study in mutualism — building collective infrastructure for workers who fall outside traditional social safety nets.

The Freelancers Union exemplifies the Network Nations principle of communities creating their own systems of care when traditional institutions fail. Its model of organized mutual benefit for a dispersed, non-geographically-bound membership (freelancers work everywhere) also has structural parallels to the translocal community model.
