Venkatesh Rao

Writer, consultant, and creator of the Ribbonfarm blog and the Breaking Smart newsletter. Known for his concept-heavy essays on strategy, organizational theory, and technology culture. He coined the term “scenius” (used by Jordan Hall in Ep 2) and introduced the concept of “Cosmopolis” — the idea that non-territorial transnational communities have always existed alongside territorial states, from the Republic of Letters to international guilds, and that digital technology supercharges rather than invents this phenomenon.

The Cosmopolis concept is referenced by Michel Bauwens in Ep 3 to historicize the Network Nations claim: networked sovereignty is not entirely new, but a technologically amplified version of long-standing non-territorial community structures. Rao’s writing on “premium mediocre,” “ribbonfarm thinking,” and organizational complexity also informs the broader intellectual context of the series.
